I am a retired certified consulting meteorologist who has been using the simple, but exceptionally accurate Tru-Chek ED9-RG100 "fence post" (or deck railing for mounting the plastic rain gauge for many decades. This rain gauge's scale measures both in millimeters and inches. The rain gauge measures up to 6" maximum capacity and as low as 0.01" of rain! This is the third one I have bought since the early 1970s and expect that this new one will last far longer than even me (since I am in my mid-70s)! No batteries to change, and all you have to do is go outside to read it and then empty it for the next precipitation event. Of course, being made of plastic, you do not ever want to leave it outside during the winter months if sub-freezing temperatures exist or are being forecasted immediately following a rainfall event.
